TextExpander Free vs Typeblast: choosing a text expander for your Mac

Compare active snippet limits, device sync, and local use. TextExpander Free has 5 active snippets; Typeblast Free has 20 on your Mac.

If you write on one Mac and want a dozen replies ready to use, Typeblast Free is worth trying. If the same snippets need to follow you between devices, TextExpander has something Typeblast does not: personal library sync.

We make Typeblast. This comparison covers the published plans checked on October 10, 2026, not a head-to-head performance test. Neither app is the right choice for every workflow.

How many replies can stay ready?

TextExpander Free lets you store unlimited snippets and keep 5 active. Its pricing page says you can swap one active snippet every two weeks. An active snippet is one you can expand now; storing a hundred snippets does not make all hundred available at once.

TextExpander pricing and active-snippet rules

Typeblast Free keeps 20 snippets active in total, with unlimited saved snippets and expansions. You can choose which snippets are enabled in your library. For example, a booking link, an email signature and ten regular client replies fit within the Free limit.

Count the phrases you use in a normal week. If you only need a few, a larger allowance may not change much. If you routinely reach for more than five, the active limit becomes a practical part of the decision.

One Mac or several devices?

TextExpander says snippets sync across devices on every plan, including Free. Its pricing FAQ lists Mac, Windows, iPhone, iPad and Chrome. That is useful if you answer messages from more than one device.

TextExpander device and sync details

Typeblast is a native Mac app for macOS 14 or later, on Apple silicon or Intel. Your personal library stays on your Mac. It does not currently offer personal multi-Mac sync or private team collaboration. Public community groups are not a substitute for either.

If device sync is essential, Typeblast will not meet that requirement today. If you mainly write on one Mac, you can try local Free use without creating an account or entering a card.

Pro costs $2.50/month or $25/year in USD. The clearest reason to upgrade is that you have more than 20 useful snippets and want them all enabled. There is no need to upgrade just because you expand the same Free snippet often.

Pro also adds JavaScript, shell and AppleScript snippets, nested snippets, and per-app exclusions. A shared signature inside several replies is one use for nesting: edit the signature once rather than maintaining a copy in each reply. App exclusions help when an abbreviation you use in messages gets in the way elsewhere.

A signed-in Typeblast account supports one active Mac at a time. Paying for Pro does not add personal cloud sync. Start with the features you need now, rather than a feature you might use someday.

What Typeblast Free and Pro include

TextExpander also puts unlimited active snippets and advanced scripting on paid plans. Its Free plan includes basic fill-ins and simple date and time content, so do not assume that a lower active limit means it only handles plain text.

Try one reply in the app where you work

Choose a sentence you actually reuse and test it in an unsent draft. Check the expansion, line breaks and abbreviation in your usual editor. This article does not promise automatic conversion of another app's scripts or fill-ins; keep your existing library and backups while you evaluate a replacement.

Typeblast needs Accessibility permission to replace abbreviations in other apps. The setup guide explains that permission and how to test your first snippet without starting a trial.
